Thanks Sikitriki, this will be very useful for me, here it is not easy to find good spearshafts for sale, and they are too heavy to ship from other places. So I will try to have a look at old cars.
I will let you know how things will go:-)

Hey Sperio, you can do it the Local way man..... go to a blacksmith probably you will find one in "7erafyeen" Sorry readers thats an area in Cairo so dont bother, Sperio will understand that. See the different kinds of steel that are available and explain to the guy what do you want exactely, lenth, diameter and tip as well...... You can find those shops as well in "New Maadi" & "Basateen" I don't know if you know the area called "Ard El Lewa" but you will find interesting stuff in there like carpenters as well who can help make your own gun  but you have to bring in the trigger system my friend. Hope this is a useful idea.

Hi trojan
I had a long history trying to make good shafts loool, every time I go to a metal work shop, I tell him I want a strong metal for 7mm shafts… and they always get me very soft metal they call(thermisione), then I discovered a great material, it is the shafts they use to clean the sewage in the streets(betoo3 el bala3aat), and it is a very flexible material that worked great with me, but it is only 8mm shafts at least, and they were fine with my old gun because its original shaft was 8mm too, only these new shafts were much heavier, anyway. I no longer find these shafts and once I found them but they were too old and already badly bent and they are very difficult to straighten them again.
Latter I began to search, and I went to(el sabteya) because they said it’s the biggest metal market in cairo, but the only material I found this material (thermisione)I don’t know the original or scientific name for it, but it is the only shafts I find in 6-8mm with the length I want, and they are too soft and get bent very easly, although I had to use them some time because I had no other choice, I used them as disposable cheap shafts.
Then I met a guy from Alexandria, in Alexandria there is many spearos, he told me there is a material they use called (solb piano) that’s again the local name for it, he also gave me the number of a workshop in Alex, and I went to him, he made me one very thin 150cm 6mm shaft for my new gun and it is great shaft, but it was the last piece that tall that he got, and it is too thin, he also got another great materials to make shorter shafts for shorter guns, and I tried his shafts and they are indestructible, but I never found this material in other places and I never found this(solb piano) at all, even this work shop he told me he finished the stock of(solb piano)that he got, and he didn’t find any more!
Last thing was I met a friend, and he told me his father know a great work shop in a (mahala) as far as I remember, and I gave him my (solb piano) shaft, and asked him to see if he find this material with 7mm thickness, and next week he told me he didn’t find this specific material but he got me 30 shafts of another material that they said it is strong!!!!!!!!!!!!! I told him I don’t need 30 shafts and I want this material, and I didn’t see them yet! But I think he got me 30 (thermisione) shafts :-( he said he can return them if I didn’t like them! But he made me feel sorry that I asked him.
And I am still looking for good shafts, there is a friend from university who work with his father in a work shop I don’t remember exactly were, but they make spare parts for motor cycles, I think he is near (genenet el fostat), and he said they can get many materials for there work that are not found in ordinary work shops, and he will ask for me and tell me if he find a material like this.
Also I will try to find this material Sikitriki told me about, it will be great if I found it.
I never thought of making my own gun, I am not much experienced with wood guns too, but it will be great to try. Maybe you can help me in the design when you come to Egypt if you want :D

my spearshaft has a screw in tip, it works ok, but i find the tip makes the gun very heavy and hard to maneuver in the water. also i allways have to be checking to see if it is screwed in properly.
I've thought about gettin a spearshaft without a tip.
Do u think it would work better?
What do u look for in a spearshaft?

Well Sperio, At the end of the day its the fun of searching and creating. Puting things together in a place where you can barely find such stuff is just a miracle. Haviing that handy man spirit is the only way to push one around to customize and create what he/she really wants. Not only Shafts & wood but even reels, bungees, triggers muzzles and the list could go on endless :) Sure pre-manufactured products are the best to go for at the end of the day, but creating your own stuff might turn out to be a hit.... you can make a living out of it one day & thats how all those big guys started. Your words show how you suffered just to make a decent shaft but its still in the air, imagine the rest :o But anyways I believe that we will get there one day through several trials and the learning process that never ends. And yielding new ideas and designs will be the creators prize, the more we practice this sport the more will come upon us. I will love to go hunting for shafts and custom made guns.... I just need the time buddy :D

Fatman..... my quote on your shaft problem.... use the Tahitian tipped Shaft its the best so far and thats my own opinion.

Cheers

Speario, I dont like fishing with a shaft that has a tip. I use a shaft that has only one barb. It is called a tahitian style shaft. It flies a lot smoother and further. Try it youll love it.
