Alderney & Casquets regulations for spearfishing 1 Year, 11 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi,

I am new user of this forum, so I will start with a short presentation (I didn't find any topic to do it??). I am french, 25 years old, live in Cherbourg in the north west, just in front of the channel islands and I play spearfishing since ten years.
I have registered to this forum to discuss about general spearfishing in the world and dream a little bit before to have enougth money to take a flight with my speargun ;-D

Just a last thing, I'm not an ace with english speaking, so sorry, but I will try to do the best^^

My first topic is regarding the spearfishing around Alderney and Casquets because I have the right to go there from Goury (French regulation, less than 6 nautic miles from harbour) with my narwhal HD 520. The problem is that I don't know if there are specific regulation because these islands are English and not french. I have contacted the local authority, but I didn't had any answer. Do someone know if it is possible for a french spearfisher, to go fishing there (of course, just for free time, non profit-making activities)?
If there are local spearfishers registered on this forum, can you please inform me regarding the regulations (or just indicate a link), and process to obtain an authorization (if needed)??

Thanks a lot for your help,

Wish you a good day,

Julien

Hi Julien,

In general, no licence or permit is required for fishing in the sea around the coast of Britain. Which is great for you. :) The only restrictions I found about spearfishing in the UK were in the non tidal reaches of Britain's rivers, on which it is illegal to spearfish - does not apply to your case.

What you should check before heading out to Alderney and Casquets is the minimum fish size allowed there. Apparently there is national legislation and local bye-laws governing the minimum size of fish and shellfish that may be legally taken.

Could not find that information anywhere, tough. To which region of the UK do Alderney and Casquets belong to? Maybe you can find more information on minimum fish size on the local government websites.

Best,
